THE MAGICIANS
by Lev Grossman
WHAT: The Harvard grad and Massachusetts native creates an utterly original world in which good and evil aren't black and white, love and sex isn't simple or innocent, and power comes at a terrible price.
WHY: If every time you board a train with a secret hope that it will find its way to Hogwarts, try this on for size. It's a Potter meets Narnia fantasy...but for grown ups.

MARCOZ ANTIQUES
173 Newbury Street
WHAT: This store's character is rooted in its owner's penchant for travel and high-end decor. Inventory here ranges from reproduction prints to Louis XVI commodes.
WHY: Marcoz is a historian's fantasy in the form of a Newbury Street Boutique. This 2009 Boston's Best pick makes other antique shops look like a thrift store.

VOGUE

WHAT: The godmother of fashion. And the September issue means about 584 pages and three or so pounds of fall gear.
WHY: If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, honey, then give them something to look at. This issue serves up inspiration aplenty, but we beg of you: wait until it's actually fall to sport a v-neck sweater & faux fur.

THE BUTCHER SHOP
552 Tremont Street
WHAT: Highly pedigreed vintages - choose from about 100 bottles - are paired with the likes of tasty pates, house-cures salumi, quivering terrines, and the renowned No. 9 Bolognese.
WHY: Well. They didn't get awarded the 2009 Best of Boston's wine bars by Boston Magazine for nothin'.

TORRENT
by Will Dailey
WHAT: The Boston-based singer-songwriter releases his folk-pop sound in stages. The first combine his first two volumes and reflect the 70's influence of the Byrds & his hometown-flavored pop.
WHY: He's calling this "a conversation between artist and audience." And since he releases songs as they are recorded, you can join in on the dialogue, too.

MELT
172 Newbury Street
WHAT: Indulging a glass of Champagne. Soaking in a pedicure tub. Melting beneath the wonders of a custom (yes, custom!) massage.
WHY: Pop in here for a skin-nourishing lunch break with a lavender infused mani & pedi. It'll distress both you & your office mates.
